What style of swimwear do you wear to the beach?

ok, i voted for the squarecut/midcut speedo in the poll, but i should probably explain some stuff.

i have a bunch of different types of swimwear, but last year i mainly went to a gay beach where anything goes (except for nudity). i only wore a bikini one time i went, but all of the other times i wore a squarecut speedo style swimsuit - that's why i voted for that. BUT i recently got an aussiebum bikini and one of their "footy shorts" that i plan on wearing this year. however, if i go to a regular beach, i'll just wear boardshorts.

My own preference is for Speedo-style suits; I've found aussieBum to be the best of the lot. Another favorite is the Body Alive bikini; both it, and the AussieBums are brief enough, and stay on in heavy surf. If I had my 'druthers, though, I'd go to a nude beach all the time; but I'm about 100 miles from Blacks Beach, and so my visits there are too rare.

I know I've posted 'em elsewhwere but these are my favourites at the moment. Found in a bargain bucket of swimwear in Gran Canaria last year for less than £2, they are definitely the cheapest (and sexiest!?) I've ever bought.

I don't wear swimwear, I always wear underwear at the beach. I like going to beach on really hot days between monday and friday, as this is the best time to see other guys in undies. There are always a few guys you have decided to cut work and go for a quick swim, but haven't planned ahead and don't have any swimwear with them. The beach i go to has limited parking, so if your really lucky, you sometimes see guys to decide to strip down in their car and then walk to beach in their briefs. I also love it when guys wear long shorts or board shorts, and they strip to their briefs to sunbake.

My nylon AussieBum swimmers of course! They are without a doubt the best since Speedo went with the crappy lycra thing...which was about the same time America bought it out.
However, if you are going to buy an AussieBum though , remember to get at LEAST one size bigger , ...the sizing is way small and you certainly don't want to end up looking like you're wearing a torniquet!!! NOT a good look!

I like my white ones best, BUT they are NOT for everyone, as they are quite transparent and you have to have confidence (oh, and probably something to "show" too,to get away with it! If your not fully comfortable with "what-you-got", especially after coming out of the er, ...cold, water try another colour.)

Actually, Bondsman, you and I have done the bloody "Ian Thorpe thing" on so many underwear boards that it sometimes feels like we ought to do it as a traveling road show! Though right now, it's summer, I've been watching Michael Phelps, Thorpie, and the other swimmers competing in Athens, and so I guess we can indefinitely defer the matter. At the very least, perhaps, we can agree to observe the famed Olympic truce!

On the AussieBum issue, I totally agree with you, of course. I LOVE my aussieBum whites, though I'm careful where I will wear them due to the famed "transparency" issue: OK on most beaches, NOT OK in most public pools!

As for the popularity of board shorts, I've thought about this. I don't think that religious oppression is behind their nefarious spread, and trust me, I'd be happy enough to tell you if I thought that were the case. At least here in SoCal, beach styles are pretty much determined by what the surfers are wearing. And board surfers generally want something long enough to prevent the chafing of their thighs as they straddle their boards. That seems legitimate to me, and I know you've surfed, and understand this also. Unfortunately, board shorts are NOT particularly practical as swimwear, but. . . . I'm afraid we're going to be seeing lots of them as long as the surfers are wearing them. TTFN!

I wear shorts like these mostly, as mostly when I hit a beach I'm with a scuba diving crowd. I wear a speedo under my wetsuit though and usually hang out in it waiting for it to dry before I change back to my shorts.

I usually wear Speedos (usually over briefs which protude) at the pool (no beach here) but I have worn just briefs to the pool which is what I did this past weekend when I went for a hot tub and swim early in the morning (6 am) at the hotel where I stayed. I have also worn just briefs on occasion at a university pool which was full of other people. Some noticed but most did not as nearly everyone is intent on swimming laps.

Now this is certainly no great revelation to anyone, ...but I swear I just don't understand women.
"Well duhhh", I hear you all saying, but bear with me while I have a bit of a rave.
In the local media here some journo with nothing better to do has just surveyed a group of women on the speedos/boardshorts thing here in Oz, and NEARLY all the women gave speedos the big thumbs down and wanted their guys in boardshorts because speedos were "too brief and revealing, or confronting(?)."
Of course the journo accompanied the article with carefully selected photos of some very attractively-bodied young spunk in boardshorts posed with a very over-weight and extremely hirsuite older (read geriatric) man in speedos way too small for him, ....very fair selection indeed! NOT!
One vapid air-head even said she ditched one otherwise perfect boyfriend just because he turned up at the beach in boardies, but then stripped to his speedos to actually swim, ...and she was just SO embarrassed, like, you know.......

Now being a regular beach-goer I have to say that what most women are almost wearing on the beach would certainly qualify under the "too brief and revealing" category, and let me tell you that most of the female bodies can't stand up to the scrutiny either, if it comes to that. For every fab-figure you see, there's quite a few roll-overs, cellulite and wobbly bits on display!
As for confronting, ...well I have learned FAR more about gynaegology on the beach than in any med. school! And believe me, I didn't want to know!

So is it OK for them to flounce about in dental floss, but we guys have to try to swim in what amounts to a failed parachute?

Yeah! Speedos and briefs are in at the beach and boardshorts are out! So my equipment shows, what of it? If anyone stares, I am glad. Some women wear the skimpiest suits. For example, I was at the beach at Chicago one summer, and at least one woman I saw wore a thong while all I had to wear were some striped boxers under a gold satin running shorts (which revealed my boxers) because I forgot my Speedos. I will be on the next plane out. I shall even wear my Speedos with my equipment pointed out, if you like. I once took a flight to Atlanta wearing some shorts with boxers underneath. Of course, when I sat down, my boxers protruded out the bottom. But I didn't care. However, the airline missed my luggage at a change of airlines enroute. I got to Atlanta but my bag did not. Superdoc, ...I spent Christmas day here on our local gay beach with a huge hamper of the very finest goodies, (and a pretty hot man too) and the ocean temp was excellent for swimming and in your language it was around 90 degrees, ....perfect weather! I wore TOMMY HILFIGER fly-fronts to swim in on Christmas day, mainly for the touch of red on the waistband. Must admit, I prefer JOCKEY or BOND'S to swim in normally, as they only have one layer of fabric in the pouch and the transparency factor is therefore much better.
I think it's amazing that guys in their underwear seem to get FAR more attention on the beach than those who choose to go totally nude.

If there are a lot of clothed people about I usually put on a minimal g-string which avoids offence, still feels pretty good and dries very quickly. Unfortunately, johseb, we here in "the land of the free and the home of the brave" are neither always free, nor always brave when it comes to our swimwear! Certain jurisdictions do indeed prohibit wearing thongs in public! Fortunately, they are few and far between. I believe that certain counties in the state of Florida prohibit wearing thong swimwear. And I believe that other jurisdictions have similar laws. Where I live, in California, the law is very explicit: state law preempts local ordinances, and while a thong would be legal, a g-string, technically, would not be. However, enforcement varies. At Venice Beach, where I go, g-strings are tolerated. Another double standard is that, generally, only men wearing thongs are singled out by overzealous law enforcement officers.

I personally don't particularly care for thongs myself, but I do believe that a person ought to be able to, pretty much, wear what he or she pleases.

I'm also assuming that your question pertains to thong swimwear, NOT thong underwear! Our religious bigots haven't yet gotten around to mandating certain types of underwear. . . . although I must note that in the state of Louisiana, there have been efforts (thus far unsuccessful) to criminalize waistband flashing!

Sigh. . . . . I wish I were making alll this up. Unfortunately, I'm not.

In the UK, things are a bit different. Throughout the land it is an offence to do or wear anything in public that is 'likely to cause offence' - ie would offend a significant proportion of the people who might see you (ie more than just the public morals nutcase). That means that on a crowded holiday beach a male thong might well be frowned upon, but would be most unlikely to attact open criticism, let alone the attentions of the law. A male g-string probably would cause vocal protest, because it might be seen as deliberately flaunting your body in a sexual way. Why a few centimetres of fabric at the top of your crack should make that difference, defeats me - except of course that a lot of g-strings are cut a lot narrower at the front (hurrah for that!). G-strings are now pretty well accepted as acceptable female beachwear, and very nice they are, too. However, I fail to see why a man's buttocks are offensive but a girl's aren't, especially when his pouch leaves almost nothing to the imagination. To a lot of guys on this site, it would be the other way round. Stripping naked on such a beach would get you arrested.
On a beach where a sign warns walkers that if they go further they are likely to encounter nudists, they do so in that knowledge and the law says that if they are offended by such things they should not proceed further. However, the basic law still applies, so the test is whether someone expecting to see nudists, and not finding that offensive, would still be offended by your behaviour. So even on a nudist beach you can't walk around with an erect cock, so if you like doing that you have to be very careful where and when you do it! As you might expect, I prefer remote beaches where I can do anything I want, rather than a 'happy holiday' nude beach with hundreds of people (many of them voyeurs) watching every move.

You can still come to Cali, Chris, and wear a Speedo or even a thong without encountering legal difficulties. You'll be in the minority, though, in most places; but you won't be harassed or intimidated! And just a couple of weeks ago, I was at Venice Beach, and when I got there, it was about 60 - 70 % Speedo-style suits; though I did notice more and more board shorts, and other kinds of shorts, as the day wore on.

Ok I might be a bit biased but i decided to pinch a few items from our stock to take on vacation with me.
So for swimwear i nicked a HOM massai hip (in red) and a HOM flash micro (in royal) to test them out.

so todays test was the Massai and i have to admit it's the most comfortable piece of swimwear that I have ever owned, to look at it (it's a wet look material) you wouldnt think it was so soft but once I got it on I didn't want to take it off.

I got some good looks off people but im not sure that was to do with the swimwear or the fact that i havent exactly looked after my body for the past year (good job my wife talked me out of wearing some thong swimwear)

Tomorrow will be the Flash micro test, its meant to be a quick drying fabric and changes colour slightly in the water.

Oh and by the way if ever going on holiday in Cyprus stay at the columbia beach resort, it's fantastic and best of all (for me) it's got free wireless internet connections allthroughout the place including by the pool.

When I go to the beach it's normally to a local "free" beach. However I prefer to be in a thong than naked. I think it's more erotic, and also more practical for running along the sand.

At other beaches I would not normally feel that a thong was acceptable, so it would be a bikini-style speedo on those occasions.

Frankly my bikini-style speedos get worn far more to the gym than to the beach. I train at a gym that is part of an aquatic centre, so it's shorts over speedos for the gym, then strip to speedos for the pool/sauna/spa.

Regarding legality of thongs, someone told me once, and I don't know if this is true: the garment is legal if you don't show genitals or anus. So a thong would be legal, but a jockstrap would not be. (A G-string MIGHT be legal, depending on the width of the strap and the size of your arsehole!)

As we all know, what is legal and what you can get away with in public are often two different things.


Until now I've had a sort of lingering envy for guys who enjoy the wonderful climate and endless beaches of California. However, now we know that even speedos are frowned upon on their beaches, not any more. Freedom is more important than climate, anyday!

I go to Hawaii a lot. Usually Maui to a place called little beach (clothing optional). When I'm at a "normal" beach, I'll wear Aussibums (god they fit great,) a speedo, a posing suit, or (if I'm trolling) a thong. In Hawaii I can get away with any of the above. However, on the mainland it's a different story. I have worn a really small bikini in Southern California, and Florida, but no thong's. Tried in Daytona once and I got a ticket. Can anyone explain to me what the hangup is with the male body. I wore a respectable thong, not see-through at all and got a ticket. A woman walked by wearing a wicked weasel bikini that was wet, and left nothing (literally) to the imagination. Am I being over sensitive here, or is there really a double standard. I know that elsewhere, a guy in a speedo is frowned upon, but I'm used to those kind of puritanical types, and try to ignore them. Anyone else had problems? Anyone else know of a friendly "Who cares!" beach? :confused:

Although they are not as prevalent as they one were, I always were a thong to the beach (I have a thong tan line that I prefer to keep in tact). In San Diego you will usually see a few other men in thongs at the beach and there is a great sunning area in Balboa Park where bikinis are the norm and there are always several men in thongs.

I was a die hard speedo and bikini guy. However, I was in Honolulu couple of weeks ago, and came across this cool little shop that was nothing but mens swimwear, underwear, and tops. It's called over easy, down under honolulu. Anyway, I bought a coral boxerbrief style suit by sauvage. It fits wonderfully. It's not a dork short, but not a bikini either. I seemed to get a lot more attention. Now I see on erogenos.com that they are selling a JM Hibiscus suit in the same style. Might just have to get a new set of beach dud's!

yea, the squarecut swimsuits are a lot more acceptable on most general beaches for mens swimwear... i think mainly cuz it's in boxer-brief form.. so it doesn't focus on the crotch or ass area. i think those are super hot for the beach. or the new trend (for girls too) is the "boy cut brief" suits.. which basically are like tightey-whitey's but in swimsuit fabric, so they're a little more coverage than the bikini.

It's technically "winter" here, but still very much beach weather, and there's lots of brown flesh out there.
Today I wore for the first time my Brazilian Cut swimmers I bought from USA, mentioned elsewhere on this site.
I got "SLATE" colour, and they look good.
Although they are not made of the thin, light, quick to dry nylon I prefer, (like AussieBums), I quite like the cut and fit.
There seem to be actually TWO layers of fabric, and I was wondering if anyone else had tried to carefully cut out the lining, at least in the front, to lighten things up a bit? I do like to dry quickly, ....nothing more uncomfortable than running around in wet, cold, clammy swimmers!
I think it would also allow a bit more frontal display, a la AussieBums, which are certainly more revealing.
Anyone tried this?

I'd say 80% of the time I wear a speedo (Aussie Bums this year) or Jim bikinis.
This is pretty well pushing the envelope on Canadian beaches where 99% wear huge baggies (YUCK!). I wear my Aussie Bums with my family and in front of all those chickens who are afraid to show anything.
I'm just waiting for that opportunity to wear the Skinz or a thong in publi :cool: c.

Yes, It is the best thing to wear at the beach. In Holland people are very permissive. I wear a very small and tight Arena trunk, black. I would like to wear a see-through next-to-nothing garment, but it is not acceptable in the co-ed swimming pool, where I do my daily early in the morning swim.

Firstly I wholeheartedly agree with what he said, which should come as no surprise to anybody.

I usually wear speedos, and I'm really happy that here in Europe it is still pretty much OK to wear those.

Currently, my favourites are speedos from N2N Bodywear, and sometimes I like to wear a bit longer but very, very tight shorts from N2N.

I always wear speedo style swimwear to the beach. I don't ever wear board shorts just because I think others might not approve of my speedos. On the other hand, I don't wear unusually skimpy or exhibitionist suits either. Currently nylon Aussiebums are my favorite. I have several pairs. I also have a relatively conservative N2N suit, conservative for N2N that is. Of course I do have the skimpy, see-thru, etc. suits too, but I save them for certain locations or "special occasions".

On regular beaches, I would go with a Skinz rio suit or, if I'm in the mood to flaunt it, with a Koala micro bikini (such as Always wet or Manload LPD).

On nude beaches I would go naked most of the time, but like to wear more "extreme" little things there too. Note that to get to nude beaches you often have to go through a regular beach first. In this case I would wear a Koala Pleasure Chest bikini. It is of a very nice white color but reveals quite a bit of your forms while walking in the sun. When I reach the nude part if the beach I would go directly for a swim. The suit becomes transparent when wet!

Here in conservative UK, I long to wear thong wear, but tend to keep it until I go on a nudist beach. I prefer scant swimwear. Mind you in a male sauna I always wear a g or thong swimwear. The briefest of the brief it has to be.

All depends where I happen to be. I prefer skimpy thongs (Alpha moda, Dore and some Koala suits) on some European beaches. Also, some of the Hom thongs were good to wear, as great rear tanlines, but they tended to have too much fabric in the front pouch so I ditched them a while ago in favour of the aforementioned.
( For our friend at Dead good undies : please use your influence and ask the women /men at Hom if they could be a bit more imaginative in their designs.For exampe why cant 'Hom ' create some adjustable beach suits with less front fabric to suit the conditions and beach cultures of different countries?

Whenever travelling further afield (in unchartered terrain!) , I start off wearing Vicorian style bloomers i.e shorts/board shorts and underneath these hideous inventions , use an adjustable front and rear thong depending on the levels of acceptability. Usualy having a few suits in your beach bag means that wherever you happen to be you are prepared.

After the beach I love private pools where anything goes and the inevitable monkey business!
