Can anyone out there tell me what Aussie footballers usually wear under those short shorts? Jockstrap? Briefs? Nothing? Also any interesting Aussie footy stories?
Chris.

Wish I could tell you. Football just isn't a popular sport overhere - at least the type of football you're referring too - and that's a real shame as the North American Football players wear way too much clothes (IMHO)
I have seen enough pictures to say that your football is a very hot sport!
(my partner is from New Zealand and has also explained it all to me)
apparently football in England is what we refer to soccer over here in NA...wierd.

Oh boy... don't get me started on AFL footy shorts.
Well you did get me started I suppose... so here goes...
I know some of the guys at school used to wear a jockstrap under the shorts for support... others just briefs, I think a couple wore speedos because they said they gave more protection than ordinary underpants.
This was before thongs became common, so I don't know what is customary now.
Although I would be interested to know what's under the shorts, for me the erotic appeal is in the shorts themselves! The dark ones seem to show off the guys' arses best, specially when the shorts get a little wet from sweat (or from mud or wet grass, a not uncommon occurrence as it's chiefly a winter sport).

Well Chris, ...I CAN tell you from first hand experience in the dressing rooms and on the field. Jockstraps were almost universally worn up until about thirty years ago, ...then guys started wearing speedos, as the shorts are so brief and were not provided with a draw string waist at the time and could very easily be pulled down in the tackles. This used to provide, ....and sometimes still does, ...some pretty spectacular sights!
The speedos provided some safety as they could be tied tightly.
Nowadays it would be VERY rare to find a jockstrap, (damn), but footballers here wear a variety of underwear. Some choose fairly conventional sports-briefs, (flyless and brief cut) ...and often superstitiously have a special pair which they wear every game. They soon become very loose, but they continue to wear them. Others still prefer the speedo, .......but worst of all in my opinion, quite a few are going for the fly-less, longer legged lycra "torpedo-pants". They are so long that they stick out the legs of those wonderful footy-shorts, and the AFL has specified that any underwear that shows on the field HAS to be "flesh-coloured".
Now I don't know about you, but I have NEVER seen anyone whose flesh is this most ghastly of granny-pink, .......and to me, it just destroys the sexy look of AFL footballers. They claim wearing the damn things decreases the chances of groin injury, but if it were up to me, I'd BAN the ugly things!
They remind me of something your aged granny might wear for incontinence!
Thankfully, most guys wear neat little briefs or speedos, which you very often get to see during the close-ups in a game, ...or if there is a spectacular "dakking", .......where in some cases the undies go down too!
There are one or two guys in the game famous for their legendary arses, (Ryan O'Keefe and Luke Ball for starters), ....and on the occasions when they get "dakked", you can pin-point every gay guy in the crowd! ;)

Seems to me that thongs would be the obvious solution - but then as a thong-lover from Y-back.... oops, I mean way back, :D I would say that wouldn't I?
Advantages:
1) No visible underwear when the shorts are worn. Yes I know some of us don't consider visible underwear to be a problem, but I personally dislike the look of a bit of underwear showing out of shorts or jeans - I like to see the whole undergarment, or else none of it. More to the point, the AFL apparently has a problem with visible undies.
2) Great support, without the need for a string sticking out the leg of the shorts.
3) In a depantsing situation, the guy may still be embarrassed (depending on the guy), but a thong covers both genitals and arsehole, so while some might refer to it as "indecent exposure" (a matter of opinion), it's not vulgar exposure. And I venture to suggest that a full depantsing - shorts plus underwear - would be less likely to happen if the underwear consisted of a thong.
4) Thong gives more protection if any players decided to try on the footy field what John Hopoate did on the rugby field.
-------------------------------
It's possible that some of the players might regard a thong as not "manly" enough. Then again, some years ago there was a bit of a fad amongst the players for wearing panty-hose on the field in especially cold weather! So maybe some of the guys are more sensitive-new-age than we think.

Here's proof that it does occasionally happen!
This is rugby, not AFL, but the shorts are much the same.

Sorry mate, ....but you are obviously NOT a close follower of AFL. Your picture you have posted IS DEFINITELY AFL!!!
It clearly shows Chris Johnson of the Brisbane Lions "dakking" what appears to be Rohan Smith of the Western Bulldogs!
Rugby indeed! Please don't confuse the elegant and skilful sport of AFL with the mindless bum-sniffing, cross-country wrestling of rugby!
What sacrilege! I may just have to revoke your "Aussie" card! :D
And for the very reason you post below, I would NOT like to see thongs become the preferred underwear for AFL players!
And I venture to suggest that a full depantsing - shorts plus underwear - would be less likely to happen if the underwear consisted of a thong.

Well, OK. As you say, I am not a close follower of AFL or rugby or indeed any other TV sport. I forget where I retrieved the image from, but it carried a title of "Ruggers getting depantsed" or something like that, so I assumed it was rugby. The relative merits of rugby and AFL is certainly not something that I lose sleep over.
I believe the quote "I don't know much about art, but I knows what I like" also applies in this case to sport.

SweatyAussie, .....just don't take me too seriously!!! :D :D :D
Of course those AFL shorts are just about the most erotic things ever to be worn on a sportsfield! Even better than rugby (league or union) shorts!
Couldn't tell I had a leg/bum fetish could you?
Who knows, ....you just may find a team with a few cuties you fancy and be out there cheering with the rest of us!
I do have two pair of underwear from two of the boys in my team. Their team mates actually conspired to "borrow" them for me from the locker room, ........and laughed themselves silly at the victim's antics trying to find said garments. They make a wonderful framed conversation piece behind my bar, I can tell you!
