The name "bathers" as the subject heading prings up a point that has been bothering me for some time....
There is not really a good name for the garment we are talking about here. I believe they are properly called "bathing suit" but that's rather cumbersome and sounds ridiculously formal.
Shortening this to "bathers" is logical, but for some reason this word seems to have fallen out of use here in recent years. Besides which it really means "people who bathe". Likewise for "swimmers".

"Togs" used to be a popular slang, but that word can also mean any clothing outfit, not just swimming togs.

"Speedos" is the popular term, but there is room for confusion. When someone says "speedos", are they talking about the Speedo brand, or just the generic garment? Can you say Aussiebums are speedos?

I rather like "cossie" (short for costume). Speedos were originally called "The great Aussie cossie".

Or we could say budgie smugglers...

I prefer "briefs"--especially white, since that all that I wear to the pool. However, once in a while I will wear a Speedo over my white briefs.

When I created the category, I never intended it to be exclusive Speedo brand, but "speedo style" - I agree it's confusing. I wish there was a catch all word to describe the style.

Maybe the category should be renamed from "Speedo" to "Speedo style" or "Speedo and similar", since Speedo is an actual brand but there are many brands with style similar to Speedo.
