With reference to THOSE two Wyoming cowboys, (or should that be sheep-herders), who found a lot more up on Brokeback Mountain than grazing land, ......and who DON'T wear underwear apparently, (DAMN), ...can anybody enlighten an Aussie who obviously doesn't speak American as to the actual meaning and derivation of the phrase "stemming the rose"?
As in when the sheep owner says to Jack Twist something like "You two were paid to be watching the sheep up there, not stemming the rose"!
Now I think I've got the general gist of what he meant, but is this a commonly used expression? What exactly does it mean? And how does it describe the act?
