View Full Version : growing up, going through styles: your story

Hello,

I was wondering what kind of styles other members have gone through growing up. From briefs to boxers, the other way round? How and why did the transitions (if any) took place?

My story:

-I remember wearing white full or low rise fly-front briefs as a boy. Was not my choice, but didn't mind them either. I actually got to like them a lot as I got older.
-Switched to no-fly low rise briefs at about 13. Mostly white or with some discreet pattern, like thin stripes. Not my choice really, as this was one of the dominant styles at the time.
-With the boxers 'revolution' at full swing, I was 'forced' to turn to (loose) boxer at about 16. The briefs were phased out completely by 17. I wasn't exactly forced to switch, boxers was the cool new thing. But I remember wanking in my last pair of white briefs at 17 and squirting big time...
-I begun wearing boxerbriefs and (a bit later) trunks at around 23. I was getting tired with the lack of support and the tacky designs of the boxers. About a year later all loose boxers were phased out of my wardrobe. Strictly trunks and boxerbriefs.
-Then at about 26, I introduced briefs again, mostly through swapping/trading with other guys, or by buying very selectively.

Never owned a pair of long johns or a thong, never tried them on. Just didn't happen! Same with jockstraps up until I was about 23. Now I own one, wear it occasionally when I want extra support, but not as regular underwear.

Yes I remeber all my underwear was white fly front briefs as a boy until, around eleven I was switched to coloured ones. mostly without front openings.

At about 14 I decided to take over underwear buying entirely rather than wear the monstrosities being provided for me (I had my changing room image to consider!!) and for a while went for coloured slips (mostly M and S) with occasional reversion to white and coloured Jockey y fronts. The athletic guys mostly went for white briefs I noticed so that was a good lead to follow.

I've always disliked boxers - baggy, no enticing outlines, complete lack of support, takes a lot of getting used to - but I did (and still do) like boxerbriefs especially in lycra which looks great rear view!!

But mostly I like what I started in - white (and sometimes Coloured) Y fronts and full-rise Calvin Kleins too. Sometimes teamed with a vest for the trad look.

Colour is great sometimes but in the end nothing beats masculine white briefs for men.

Colour is great sometimes but in the end nothing beats masculine white briefs for men.
Now THERE folks, speaks the voice of a man who knows definitive truth.
I started in white fly-fronted briefs, .....which I loved then, and still do. They were "men's undies".
Of course I tried those nasty little coloured poorly designed fly-less  bikini things that suddenly became fashionable, but always in block colours though, ...never patterns. I still do not like patterned underwear, ....can't really explain why.
Quickly returned to the classics in white, ......NEVER ever did the boxer revolution, ......I always hated the look of the damn things, fashionable or not. Nor do I ever go down the g-string or thong stage, ....it's just not for me.
I have a few nice boxerbriefs, again white or solid colours (all WITH flyfronts, ...on that point I refuse to compromise), that I will wear if forced to, but remain steadfast in wearing, buying (and loving) wonderful masculine white flyfronted briefs, with occasional appearances in a jockstrap when the activity or mood takes me. I find there is more than enough variation in fly-styles and designs in briefs to hold my .....er, ..."interest" if you take my meaning, ...and I'm sure you do!
Unfortunately I find anything with lycra sure fits well and looks good, but too sweaty for the climate here where I live. Might be OK for you blokes in colder climates, but I sure hate sweating in my jocks. Too uncomfortable.
I do conversely however own several pairs of wonderful longjohns, but really have no possibility of actually wearing them for any length of time, ....other than with the obligatory flannelette check (plaid to you) shirt and boots when Dearest Boyf. and I want to play "lonesome lumberjacks", .....which is a bit like Brokeback Mountain, ....but with a MUCH happier ending!;)
I see in this thread that most blokes have come back to where they started so-to-speak.
Are our true underwear tastes actually formed very early on, ...and the rest are just flirtations, ...which see us return as we get older?
One interesting thing I have also noticed here on this board and elsewhere that the very minimalist styles are far more likely to be found on .......now how can I put this delicately, .....on shall we just say more mature men, rather than on the young blokes.
Why is this?
You would think that the possession of a firm youthful body would see blokes more eager to show it off, ......and for those gravitationally older to go for more cover-up styles, but this doesn't seem to be the case in reality. Why?
Perhaps it just takes a lot longer to work up the courage to appear in something very minimalist?
Can't speak from experience, but I do find it an interesting phenomenon.
Perhaps someone else here may venture a theory?

My guess there would be because the more mature folks are less likely to conform to the norm and/or follow the current fads. After all, as one grows older (at least from my point of view, which may mean nothing), one grows a larger set of cajones (metaphorically speaking, of course) and breaks away from social expectations and focuses on his own tastes and desires, rather than trying to fit in with the crowd.

As for me and the styles I went through growing up..

As far back as I can remember, I wore regular white Fruit of the Loom and/or Hanes briefs. When I was a teenager, I noticed many (if not most) of the boys in the locker room wearing the flyless bikini or low-rise colored/patterned briefs. As soon as I got my first job, I immediately spent money on a new wardrobe which included all new underwear, and yes, I bought MANY pairs of colored bikini briefs. I really liked them, and for many years after, I continued this trend. However, I recently purchased some Calvin Klein 365 black briefs. Just plain fly-front black briefs. I love them! They don't ride as high as a regular FOTL or Hanes brief, and I'm currently searching for some white fly-front briefs that are of the low or mid-rise persuasion.

I guess you always go back to the basics. The basics are good. :D

I think that you tend to find a fashion that you like by the time you're in your 30s and stick with it - not just with underwear but with all clothes. You then need a fairly major influence to make you change.

I've gone through all sorts of fads in underwear. I can't really remember what I wore as a child but I think is was some kind of white fly fronted brief bought by my mother. I went through a phase of the moor roomy brief, tight bikini bottoms, boxer shorts (that didn't last long as they are just not comfortable :( ), thongs for evening wear (don't show a line under tight trousers), boxer briefs, etc.

Then, when I was mid 30s I found HO1s. The horizontal fly was a wonder for anyone who.s left handed (I am). I started with HO1 briefs and moved onto their boxer briefs. From there I found other makes that also offer a horizontal fly.

I do wear jock straps when I'm at the gym and want to stop everything getting squashed between my thighs but that's about it for variation now.

I've just thought of the other underwear I possess - long underwear and Union suits. I only get the chance to wear then if it is a very cold winter but I find wearing them to be "exciting" ;)

I've discussed my personal underwear history before - but just BRIEFly: :D:D

Stage 1: Up to about age 14, I wore what my Mum bought for me, which was fairly loose Y-front "briefs" (I call them that to distinguish them from boxerbriefs, although they were not all that brief. As far as I know, almost all men wore that style back then, certainly it was all I saw advertised.

Stage 2: At about the age of 14 Mum got me a couple of pairs of Bonds Dynamite bikini briefs - one light blue, the other dark blue. It was the first time I ever felt underwear to be sexy, and I found myself wearing those a disproportionate amount of the time.

Stage 3: from teenage years onwards I bought my own, and they were always the bikini brief style similar to the Dynamite briefs.

Stage 4: it was probably about 10 years ago that I started to seriously give thongs a try - prior to that one didn't often see them in underwear departments. Since then I have alternated between briefs and thongs but the balance is tending more towards the latter.

I believe the reason why I like coloured undies better than white is because in my mind I always assocaite white with the daggy things I used to wear as a kid, even though I know there are plenty of white undies that are quite sexy and not daggy at all.

------------------------------------------------------------

Hmmm... I said this was going to be brief, but I guess I SLIPped up there.

Yeah Kev, I think you just might be right. I have observed that despite all the loud protestations of "individuality" by teenagers, ....that they all are really terrified of "standing out" from their peer group, and tend to go out of their way to conform in everything they say or do so as to appear "cool", .....(hate that expression); ...but really they become carbon-copies of each other.
When you get a bit older, ...and particularly after you come to terms with the fact that you ARE different if you are gay, then you get the courage to go with it, so to speak.
Oh, and thanks for indulging in the discussion Kev, .....I really enjoy hearing your views and being able to go beyond the usual three word appreciative comment, but I have a sneaking suspicion that these days here in the public forums might just be numbered. Hope not.

as a child I wore briefs. when I was in sixth grade I switched to boxers. I think the switch was mostly due to peer pressure. When I started junior high I was able to get back to wearing briefs on sporting events. I played football, basketball and tennis. In football our coaches made us wear jocks. Everyone said that they hated it at the time, but it was obvious that there were a few around that liked it quite a bit. There was no norm in basketball, but Tennis allowed me to wear skimpy sport briefs under my shorts. We would all stretch on the court and you could not help but look up the short of the other players. I know there were a few that were looking up mine. Fine with me... I would put on at show. This is probably wear my underwear passion began. I still remember going to buy different pairs of skimpy sport briefs on a regular basis and anticipating what my tennis partners would wear at the next practice.

I must have started in loose "trunks" as they were called (white interlock cotton & shapeless:(). In my teens I changed to white Y-fronts, like at least half the boys my age (some still wore trunks).
Later as I bought my own underwear I wore bikini briefs in plain colours, full briefs or boxers as I felt like. I go through phases of preferring coloured (even multi-coloured) or plain white.
Next I discovered French styles of briefs and boxerbriefs - a relevation _ sooo much better shaped in the pouch:D. Later still the HO1 fly which is what I really like.:)
Latterly I have been into wearing thongs, when the weather is warm enough. It took some trials to find ones that were comfortable to wear though.
The only styles I don't wear now are boxers, which just no longer feel right.:( (Never been into long-johns:eek:)

Started off in briefs (y-fronts I think), then to smaller cuts as I got older. Moved on to loose boxers with "humorous" designs in my teens (well it was the 80s). Early 20's I experimented with boxer briefs but by 24 or so, I was back to bikini briefs, with thongs, jocks and briefs thrown in for variation...hasn't changed much since them!

Like everyone else, I started off in white fly-front briefs and pretty well stuck with those into high school. I go through phases though... occasionally slipping into a skimpier undie (i.e. thong, jockstrap, bikini). I also went through a period where I enjoyed the trendier undies (colored and patterned 2xist, Cin2, etc), but I don't really like them anymore as I find patterns and designs distracting from the natural beauty of briefs. Primarily, and even more so in the past year, I stick with white fly-front briefs as I think they're the sexiest things in the world.

Like many of you, I had a number of stages:

1. Up to my mid-teens, my Mum brought my underwear which were rather unsexy trunks/shorts. At that stage I didn't take much interest in underwear.

2. After being seduced by a schoolfriend who wore Y-front briefs (better, he said, for controlling rampant teenage erections) I persuaded my Mum to buy me briefs (the similar Wolsey X-fronts).

3. In my late teens I started to buy my own briefs, mainly bikini styles such as Jockey Skants. I also discovered in a shop sale some minimal bikini slips (1 see-thru!) from G-wear which I kept hidden.

4. After leaving home and getting my own place, I started to buy a lot of mail-order underwear from firms such as Stanley Esq, Intersparta, Kiniki and Body Aware. These tended to be extremely brief - G-strings, thongs, a lot of see-thru gear.

5. I realised my faves were thongs so started building up a collection (now over 100 pairs).

6. I was seduced by the bulging pics on packets of boxer briefs, so started to collect these (only skin-tight ones with plenty of lycra) which I wear in the colder months.

7. I have now become more selective and tend to buy extreme styles from Koala, Dore, Fireboy etc as I have plenty of undies for everyday wear. Underwear plays a big role in sex with my boyfriend.

8. What next???;)

As a little tyke I wore colored/screen printed briefs. I did this until about age 5, when my sister and her friend made fun of my underwear after lifting up my robe. It was tighty whitys from then until middle school. My dad wore bikini briefs and in middle school I wanted to be just like my dad. My mom bought me some (though I wore the tighty whitys on days I had gym class). I thought the bikinis were so much more comfortable, I decided when I headed to high school, I didn't care. By that time my mom had also gotten me some colored briefs again. First day of gym in high school, I wore my bikinis and decided I don't give a damn who makes fun of them! Turns out a bunch of guys had the same idea, bikinis were all the rage (or some wore boxers .. a small hand full wore colored briefs, but the tighty whity brigade got mocked for wearing "little boy underwear" and most of them changed to bikinis within the next two weeks.) When I turned 17 I started buying my own underwear, and stuck with bikinis and experimented a bit with "sport briefs" (aka string bikinis), and no-fly hip briefs. The bikinis gradually got phased out (what was available to buy just didn't have enough of a pouch for me, which is shocking because I don't think I'm that "big" down there). And thats how it was all through college.

The String bikinis faded out after a while (for the same reason the bikinis did). Hip briefs were all I wore for a while, until a girl I was dating talked me into boxers. I went on the most uncomfortable date in my life -- the sex at the end didn't make up for the lack of support and comfort, and I was back to some kind of brief the next day.

Today I wear various styles and I have a mix of conservative colors (Black, white grey), and bright/fun colors and patterns. I have some bikinis again (I found a brand tat I find comfortable), some string bikinis, some thongs, some fly front briefs, and some trunks/boxer briefs. I have 1 pair of boxers that I wear around the house if we have company that can see me in my underwear, but not the tight stuff.

And that's my story.

Childhood spent wearing little plain coloured Y-fronts, then mum moved me on to bikini briefs with all sorts of weird prints on them. As I reached adulthood, I was still into the bikinis and string bikinis, but got talked into boxers - but it didn't last as I didn't find them comfortable, even though many blokes did. Now I have a mix of string bikinis, bikinis and boxer briefs; I like the latter in the colder months.

That's it.

As a kid I used to wear Jockey Y fronts - white of course up until I was about 14.
Then I insisted that my mother buy me the coloured lo rise briefs from Jockey still Y front but that was the fashion here.
When I was 18 and had a job I bought the smallest nylon mesh ones that I could find and wore these for a couple of years.
Then I went and bought Jockey Skants - but only plain colours and used to swap and change between these and the mesh ones.
By the time I was in my mid 20s I was buying whatever was going at the time so had all sorts and just used to keep buying them, so ended up with quite a few pairs this is probably what started my thing about mens undies lol..
By the time I was in my 40s boxers where all the rage so I bought some and wore them for a while but ended up buying boxer briefs when the appeared.
Now I wear all sorts just whatever takes my fancy at the time and sometimes will change two or three times in one day. So in one day I might start off with real tight whities then boxers then g-string.

One thing is I never buy multi coloured or patterned undies - they have to be plain colours.

My memories of wearing baggy boxers shorts because that is what was popular at the time, and I hated them, I remember seeing a lad getting changed after pe at school in briefs and I liked the look of them.

I remember finding an advert at the back of the News of the World (a UK newspaper) for briefs, so I ordered some, paying via postal order and as soon as they arrived I put them on, and have been wearing briefs ever since, altough if I am just lounging around the house, I will wear a pair of tight hipster/trunk boxerbriefs.

I have a pvc pair of briefs that I have ordered from Kiniki and also have various tight and revealing pairs of briefs, tanga and hipster briefs.

Wow, I feel like I could almost write a thesis on this topic. Like everyone I started off in briefs (I am not a parent, but I assume that all boys do even nowadays?). For the most part if memory serves they were tighty whities, normally Y-fronts of the white mesh variety (Jockey I think was the most popular brand). As I grew older (perhaps around 10 or so) I remember getting bikini briefs in a variety of colours including some candy striped ones which were a particular favorite. Even at that stage I was a fan of undies and I remember that one of my favorite things to do at night, when I thought everyone was asleep, was to get out of bed and grab a couple of pairs from my cupboard. I would then sneak back to bed, take off my pj pants and then try on my undies, sometimes more than one pair at a time. It was during one of these evening escapades, when I was 12, that I came for the first time. I was a shy, retiring kid with no older brothers and the whole thing took me by surprise as while I had heard of the changes that were to come brought on by puberty it was not what I expected at all!

Any event moving on from there I continued to wear brief sort of undies all through my teens and early twenties. During my mid teens I was introduced to tangas which I wore for many years as did many of my contemporaries at high school (mostly white). I am always interested to read the reports on this site that guys changed their undies in their teenage years due to peer pressure. For a start growing up in SA as I did, all high school boys wore briefs of a sort, but more importantly being a reasonably conservative culture I would be very surprised if anyone in locker room situation would have ever commented on another boys underwear.

In my mid-twenties I was given a pair of boxers for Xmas. Initially I just used them for sleeping in, but eventually I built up the courage to put them on under my suit and wear them to the office one day. I still remember that day very clearly as I was petrified of getting an erection for all to see. Bearing in mind I was still in the closet this was actually a real problem as I got erections at inappropriate times when I was around a hot guy as opposed to one of the fairer sex. Any event, like many I was convinced that they were the trendy thing to wear and shortly thereafter having moved to the UK, I started wearing them on a daily basis. It was also around about this time that I started having a bit more money of my own which allowed me to start experimenting with different styles of undies. I remember buying my first thong which had a rather thick string at the back so you really did get the whole wedgie treatment. I think that put me off them for life and I have never gone back there. I also bought a very cute all in one union suit sort of thing, but with short arms and legs. While it was actually very comfortable to wear, going to the toilet was not easy so I soon gave up on that.

For about 10 years thereafter I was lost in the boxers wilderness. I only wore briefs or jocks for sports and for the rest of the time I flapped about unsupported. Then one day a revelation happened, I discovered 2-xist trunks. They were and still are in my view one of the best designed undies in the world. Just the right amount of support and the right amount of freedom, not mention the great quality build. I spent a fortune buying as many pairs as I could find (not always that easy) and wore them daily for a good 3-4 years. I then discovered Gap Trunks which I think are also an excellent fit and come in a lot of fun patterns so I also started wearing these as my everyday undies.

So you would think that, that would be that. Well no, in a surprise twist, about a year ago I was in Macy’s and I spotted a pair of Tommy Hilfiger stripped briefs. They looked great and I thought that they would work well for exercise so I grabbed them. Hmmm, not only did they look great, but they fitted great and were astoundingly comfortable. In no time at all I was back and bought more. I then started finding that in the mornings instead of reaching for my usual trunks I was starting to put on briefs on a daily basis. What can I say, I like many have come full circle and now I back to being a tighty whitie fan (although very seldom are they white). Currently I am a big fan of the said TH briefs and also the CK 365’s (although I think the pouch at the front could be a bit bigger, and this is from someone with an average endowment).

So there we have it, a brief (sic) and hugely truncated history of my life in undies. Hope you found it interesting. If you have any thoughts, comments feel free to beam me a message.

Yours in undies.

Roo,
I'm not sure what it was about my high school (because I don't think it would be normal through out the US at the time), but the undies you wore (or at least allowed your classmates to see) said a lot about you. I had a friend who was teased for being a white brief wearer (decidedly the most unpopular style at the time), who just wasn't interested in changing. The boxer guys were a certain group, and most of the guys were wearing bikinis. I have no idea what caused it, but I think my attention to underwear was started because it was a bit of a status symbol.

Hey Roo, ....just had to say how much I enjoyed your brief-tales!
It's always interesting to read other's life journey from an underwear perspective, and you certainly document yours well.
You seemed to spend too long in boxers for some reason, .....but hey, the way so many men return once again to the tighty-whitie style is amazing, ...even though, as you mention, they may not actually be "white"! (Damn!)
It's also unusual to read here that some blokes admire and find that very style the most arousing on other fellers, yet don't wear them themselves, ....as yet!
Back in those pre-Jurassic days when boxers and "sagging" were actually in fashion, (can anyone remember THAT far back?), I used to get asked why I still wore white briefs, .....I always replied because I found boxers so damned unbelievably "UGLY", not to mention uncomfortable...which seemed to answer the query, ......and now? Those very same blokes who asked are wearing versions of briefs themselves! Sometimes mine too, ....the cheap bastards!
Amazing how they will hang around for stuff I'm throwing out.
I have been trying to reduce the huge number in my collection down to something more manageable. There were boxes and boxes, ...(NO, NOT BOXERS!); of the stuff everywhere!
Thanks for sharing your journey roo, ......it makes a great read!

I grew up wearing whatever my mother bought for me - but in my childhood, there was only one style available, white, jockey-style y fronts. Mine were all Jockey brand (same as my dad I remember) although I guess there one or two other brands. When I was 14 I went to a boarding school (5 days a week) and while being outfitted with shirts and trousers, Mum decided I needed new briefs. But that store didn't have any white y front Jockeys, only sky blue, with white waistband and white contrast stitching. She wasn't going to get anything but the traditional white, and wasn't going to buy them, but I insisted that they were "okay, mum, they will do fine." Hence began my journey.
When I started earning my own money, I went for all the bikini/coloured variety. Back in those days they were made of nylon (and who knows what else - do you remember "Crimpilene"?). I got all the stripey, banded, rainbow coloured ones I could find. Sadly, all my Jockeys from those years disappeared. Would love to have them still.
Then came the "flouro" craze - flourescent pink, yellow, orange, red, mauve, you name it I had the full range. Still in the bikini style however.
When the Internet came along, I noticed that all the hot guys had on white, fly fronted Calvin Kleins. For years I lusted after those briefs. Eventually I found a penfriend in the USA who was willing to swap underwear - he bought CKs for me, and I sent him the Aussie brands - Rio, Underdaks, Bonds and similar, all in bikini styles. Although Bonds do make a white brief with horizontal fly and a kind of kangaroo pouch. He liked them too I remember. Bit too full for my liking, but I did try for a while.
Tried boxers a few times, but I hated getting all my equipment all tangled up. Just too much cloth and always seemed to ride up my back side and leave the important parts either strangled or cold. Decided I am not a boxer guy.
I guess I have come full circle, because I am back to where I started - Jockey Y fronts, but these days I prefer the coloured Jockeys (when I can get them) with contrast colours, or the coloured Bonds with the funny side-ways fly. Now I have a drawer full of Calvin Kleins (all white) and a few other similar brands. But just sometimes I break out and buy a 7 pack of Rio's or Bonds (these days they come with a higher waist and a wider waistband), in seven different colours - the kind they sell in Kmart and similar for $10 for 7, and often throw in a free extra one. Consequently I have several drawer fulls of coloured bikini styles too, plus a whole lot of others.
I also have an almost complete collection of Aussiebum briefs in almost the whole colour range. Ditto for the older style DTs.
One day I will get around to "cataloguing" them all for you. :)

Hi Guys

Thanks for the positive feedback on my posting.

Crick76, all I can say is I wish that there had been more of an undies culture in the locker room when I was growing up. Mind you seeing the hot surfer guys in their tighty whities was always a pleasure!

Bondsman, fear not as a complete undies nut I have my fair share of tighty whities and they get worn a lot. I am thinking of buying some Tiger Briefs, as I have never tried the double seat thing. Anyone ever tried them??

Wetstud, thanks for the photos of the Aussiebums. I have often thought of trying these, but to be honest I find them horrendously expensive for what they are (I am talking about in the shops in London). This comes from someone who spends a lot of underwear so the big question - are they worth it?

Cheers

SO glad to hear that roo! I have tried the curious double-seated thing, ....I own a couple of pairs of TRACTOR BOY undies with their distinctive rainbow waistband, ...sadly no longer made. I have ordered from the TIGER site, designated "creepy" by some here, (but definitely NOT ME), and will let you know what I think of them when they arrive.
I am very glad that someone is still making this style.

You want my honest opinion?
Even as a patriot from OZ itself, I have to say "NO"!
Sure the "style" is fine if you happen to like your undies VERY brief, ...but to me now it's a whole lot of hype and not much substance for your buck, .....or pound in your case.
The fly-fronted styles have a "fly", ...and I use the term loosely, .....SO small and tight, AND SO FAR OFF TO THE SIDE, and in such a small brief anyway that it's purely decorative. NO man would take the time to fiddle around using it when the waistband is so low that its quicker and easier to just go "over-the-top" so to speak.
By the time you even half managed to get your dick out the AussieBum fly you would have pissed yourself in frustration.
The fly-less styles now remind me of those VERY brief bikini briefs that were around in the 70s, ....I have a few vintage pairs of those, and let me tell you they are so small as to be bloody uncomfortable, ...but they were no where near as expensive back then though.
Sure the AussieBum patterns and colours look great in the ads; ....they ALWAYS choose VERY hot models, ...but as someone who has shelled out for the undies themselves, (they are very expensive even here in Oz), I must say if you are content with paying for hype over substance then go ahead. The quality of manufacture is now nowhere near as good as it was when they first burst onto the underwear scene either.
I find them now to be about the same standard as Ginch Gonch, .....another triumph of style over substance IMHO. You will note that I now look for more than just eye-catching colour when I shop for undies. Specially if I'm paying big bucks for little things!
AussieBums look good when you first get 'em though, and there are some very nice shots here onsite of blokes wearing them, but as REAL undies that you might wear more than twice?
Depends on how deep your pockets are really!

Primarily, and even more so in the past year, I stick with white fly-front briefs as I think they're the sexiest things in the world.
And may I just add that what you put into them, and hang out of them sometimes, makes them just that?
