View Full Version : At what age did you start sleeping in your underwear?

That's the question: At what age did you quit wearing pajamas and start sleeping in your underwear?

I realize that not everyone made a transition such as this (i.e. sleeping naked, or wearing a t-shirt only, etc..) Please understand that I am NOT trying to lump everyone into one category or the other. A few friends of mine never wore pajamas and underwear was all they've ever slept in. From what I can tell, the vast majority of adolescent and young-adult males tend to sleep in their underwear. From the few people I've discussed this with, it varies from around 4 years of age to early teens.

Why am I asking this, you ask? Here's the backstory: In another thread on here, some of the repressive events of my upbringing were brought to the forefront (on a personal level) by a few questions that were asked. These repressive events created a very poor self image and has had lingering effects on me, even up to now, well into adulthood. I was terrifed of showing a little skin around friends when I was a kid, and the one and only time I stayed over at a friend's house when I was 7 or 8 years old, he stripped down to his briefs before bed and thought it was strange that I was wearing pajamas. I did find it interesting that the next morning when we both arose, we ate breakfast with his family and him, his older brother AND his father were all at the breakfast table, wearing only underwear. Most of that morning he (my friend) wandered around the house in his underwear only, too. From that point forward, I never stayed overnight at friends' houses. I'm sure you can imagine the terror of having to strip naked in front of a class full of boys in junior high when we were required to shower after physical education class.

I started sleeping in my underwear at age 17. It caused a monumental upheaval in my home (mostly with my mother). I stood my ground and eventually she relented, but it really sucks that something seemingly so trivial to me was such a huge deal in my household. As stated in the other thread, NOBODY in my house was allowed to venture out of bathrooms or bedrooms in anything less than fully clothed.

So, as I stated: How old were you when you ditched the PJ's and started wearing underwear only to bed?

(Sorry about the long post, guys. I tend to be long winded in real-life, too :D )

Hmmm...interesting thread - I can partly relate to your experience. We were actively discouraged from walking around the house unless fully clothed and I too suffered from terror whenever I had to take my clothes off outside the house and with others around.

Having said that, I think I started sleeping in my undies around the age of 15 - there was fortunately no resistance from parents. I only sleep with a top on and maybe pj pants if I have a very bad cold and need to get warm. But otherwise I find clothing in bed very uncomfortable.

It was never frowned upon in our house growing up but I never did sleep in just my underwear until I went away to school and stop sharing a room with my brother. So for me I would say 19. I know that is sad. But I haven't looked back since.

On another note, I don't walk around my house in just my underwear now unless no one else is home. I think I do have some sort of "embarrassment".

I started sleeping in my briefs when I went to scout camp......it was easier and one less item to pack. Have always slept that way since, either in a jockstrap or briefs. I tried boxers, but the extra fabric balling up around my legs drives me nuts.

well we in my family, like in yours friends family, are shy free, even my mom can be found in her underwear in the house.

i have no category, may be a short and a tshirt or just the underwear and tshirt, but never naked because i was asthmatic, and if i use no tshirt i would suffer asthma.

we never use pajamas, Panamá is so fucking hot, if i dear to use it, my legs will sweat a lot.

I don't ever remember having PJs, although I suppose I may have. I remember that I had a pair of old gym shorts that I took to summer camp/ sleep overs -- although at least at most of the summer camps I went to the the shorts were only used to go from the tent to the showers (or what ever bathing situation was available). Frequntly at sleep overs, the shorts went unused. I used to breakfast in my underwear and (usually untied) robe as a little kid. Nudity and states of undress were not a big deal in my family. My boyfriend (now husband) got me into sleeping in the nude. Some nights I sleep nude, some nights in what ever underwear I wore all day, some days I get home from work and shower and then I put on something (boxer briefs which I don't consider real underwear because I never wear cloths over them, or briefs, or just wrap a sarong around my waist) -- on those days I'll either sleep nude or in whatever I put on after my shower.

I hope my answer wasn't too long winded.

Sorry guys - sleeping naked is best! I stopped wearing pjs when I went away to college and have not worn anything in bed since - nothing in the way of attention or action.....;) lol

I really appreciate those of you who have chimed in on this topic. I'm glad to hear that I wasn't the only one that grew up in a repressive household.

The stories you guys have opted to share have definitely helped me understand MANY things that I've been dealing with, for many years. The only thing I had hoped for (as far as this thread is concerened) is that more people had posted their thoughts, views and experiences on it.

I can say this, though: If/when I ever have a child, I will NOT raise him to feel shameful of his body, no matter what body type he may have. This is not about underwear, but about poor self image. I have finally recognized where a lot of the image issues I have about myself stem from, and now I know what I need to do to rectify these issues. I'm finally making some progress on this, and I feel good about it. :D

I spoke at length with my very best friend of 20 years and a few other long term friends yesterday and we all spoke at length on this subject. I was afraid that they would think I was strange for asking it, but as it turned out THEY had discussed this very topic recently amongst themselves, and were planning on confronting me about my lack of willingness to bare ANY skin around them. (I should add that of all my friends, I'm the only one that is not completely shameless, haha) I explained my "reservations" on this and why I felt the way I did, even to the point of the topic of this very thread. Mind you, I am gay and all of these friends are straight, so for them to be this comfortable around me is VERY comforting to me. When I mentioned the major upheaval when I opted to start sleeping in my underwear to them, they didn't quite understand why a parent would be so livid about something seemingly minor. My best friend knows my family very well, and when I told him about that (I'd never told anyone about this before), it made sense to him, simply because he's more or less been a part of my family for the last 20+ years.

So, this has made me feel better about things. Although I'm not going to go busting out into the street in my undies, I can assure you the next time I go over to my friend's house, I WILL be poolside, shirtless, and wearing some swim trunks, (and not those hideous board shorts that go all the way down to your knees!). So, I've got some shopping to do. ;)

Back on topic: I'd like to hear from some more people on this subject about when you decided to start sleeping in your underwear and why you decided to do so. I never really stated WHY I started, but the reason was because I was tired of the t-shirt and pj bottoms getting all bunched up in uncomfortable spots, or being way too hot when I slept. That, and I just wanted to feel like any other normal 17 year old, because I felt anything but normal.

Yes, an interesting thread...
I guess I was about 12-13 when I shed the pjs. I would walk from my bedroom into the bathroom to shower and then come out fully dressed.
Not much has changed; however, I will walk around my house now and even in the backyard (with a 6' privacy fence) in my underwear. If any of the neighbors see me in the backyard (watering plants, feeding the dog, etc)
then they shouldn't be peeking into my yard over the fence.

Kev, I do wish you were here. I have nearly 6 acres, all designated "Underwear Zone", .....and everyone knows who visits, (it's popular in summer), that my pool and surrounds are strictly underwear only, .....NO BLOODY BORED-SHORTS!
Even visiting tradesmen who ask if they can swim when it's hot get this message, .....and obey!
I am SO glad that you have been able to work through some of your personal issues with help from this board.
It, and previous incarnations I belonged to were a great help to me too!
Who'd have ever guessed SO many blokes love underwear?
But back to your original question. When a child I was provided with pyjamas as we all were. In adolescence when I discovered wanking was SO much more pleasurable for me if I wore undies, I would often get up quietly and get my favourite briefs or jockstrap from the drawer, go back to bed and take off my PJ pants and put on my briefs/jock and indulge in my favourite teenage pastime......I kept a supply of handkerchiefs for the very predictable result!
I justified my VERY enjoyable habit as an attempt to prevent wet-dreams and the mess in my PJs, ......but I have to tell you that those uncontrolled night time spurts still took place anyway.
Ahh youth, when two seemingly bottomless cum-tanks swing below your ever-ready dick! And my nutsack had started to grow HAIR! Boy, was I excited! The only downside was I couldn't look at my stash of underwear catalogue pics, .....but I did possess a very vivid imagination, and let me tell you that it saw many men got lots of attention in their fly-fronted briefs, while I attended to what was jutting so firmly out of mine!

Of course I had to remember NOT to fall asleep before I took off my undies, and put the PJs back on.
After I left home at 17 to go to uni, I gave up pyjamas altogether as "daggy" and slept nude, or wore undies sometimes, but only for "night-sports".
I do like the cock-&-balls to get a bit of air, so to speak. It avoids rashes etc.
Now, I live in quite a hot, humid climate, and find that the bed sheets can become soiled from body oils or any creams applied after the sun, so both I and Dearest Boyf sleep in very big loose white T-shirts, .......but nothing below.
Neither of us ever suffer anything like jock-itch, which can be a problem if blokes constantly wear close fitting undies day and night.
WE swim and sunbake in underwear all the time, whether guests/tradesmen are here or not.
Neither he nor I have any qualms about walking around the house in underwear, .... indeed often we will come home and shower, and wear only undies to lounge around or watch TV.
Mind you, if he wears anything particularly to my fancy, ......not a lot of TV gets watched.
Sometimes I am quite sure he knows how to exploit my particular fetish very much to his own advantage!:blowme:blowme:blowme
Bless his little white cotton fly-fronted briefs!;););)

I was about 14 or 15 when I gave up on pyjamas. I kept wearing underwear until 12 years ago when I met my now husband. He slept naked and I followed suit. I've never worn anything (except a smile) to bed since then.

I started sleeping in underwear when I was about 12-13. Seemed like a naughty thing to do. I preferred nude but always afraid of my mother walking in. Walking around the house in our underwear was not acceptable in our house so had to keep it behind closed doors. I do remember on several occasions when home alone (which was rare with 3 other siblings) standing in front of a full length mirror in my parents room and admiring myself in my Fruits and eventually jacking off. AHHHHHHHHH to be young again ,,,

Gosh you guys certainly know how to elicit the memories. This is not something that I have thought about for years, but casting my mind back it was indeed a big issue for me as a kid and teenager. I grew up in a reasonably conservative household where nudity or walking around in ones underwear was far from the norm. As a child, like most I wore PJ’s to bed but being a bit of an undies nut I always dreamt of the day that I could go to bed in just a pair of briefs. As I have confessed in a recent post I used to get up at night and put my undies on for a while as I found it to be fun and exciting (and a bit naughty). But when it came down to it, in order to sleep I would need to be in my PJ’s (too much stimulation otherwise). When I approached my teenage years, attending sleepovers it became clear to me that more and more of my peers were sleeping in their undies (briefs). I wanted to emulate them, but I was too shy to suddenly give up my PJ’s, so I started wearing my briefs under my PJ’s (useful for nocturnal emissions). Shortly thereafter, my mother bought me what were then called “sleeping shorts” which for all intents and purposes are what we now know as boxer shorts. This meant that I could lose the top part of the PJ’s and so I slept in these shorts with my briefs underneath. At around the age of 15 or 16 I started sleeping in the briefs alone, just using the sleeping shorts for before I went to bed and when I got up in the morning. Over time, the shorts sort of faded away and I “openly” started sleeping in my briefs alone. Then of course came the wilderness years in my 20’s where I gave up wearing briefs in favour of boxers. Naturally at this stage I wore boxers to bed for many years. Then in true turnaround fashion, about 3 years ago I saw a cute pair of shortie PJ’s with cars on them (my other true passion) and I could not resist them. I landed up buying them and sleeping in them that night. Revelation! They were comfortable with lots of room to squirm around in (I am not a good sleeper). Ever since I have been hooked and have bought a whole lot more pairs. I particularly recommend Nautica and Brooks Brothers. So in nutshell, having gone full circle I am back to wearing briefs and shortie PJ’s – perhaps out mothers were right after all!

Interesting memories!

Cheers

Roo

I slept in pyjamas well into my teens. I can't say for certain when I graduated to underpants, but it wasn't much before I left home at the age of 21 to move interstate. That's not counting the odd occasion when I put on my swimmers to go to bed just as an experiment.

I don't remember any pressure being put on me to wear pyjamas or not to wear them - it was just something I thought was normal. My father wore them, and from time spent with other clan members I think so did my uncles and male cousins. I grew up thinking that that's what all men wear, all the time, in bed - except maybe when making love.

I remember distinctly the first time I realised it might be considered acceptable to wear something different from PJ's. It was one of those American situation comedies from the 1960's - it might have been Father Knows Best or My Three Sons, around that era anyway. One of the boys got out of bed in the morning, and he was wearing just a white T-shirt on top - I don't remember what the pants were but they couldn't have been anything too risque for the TV audience, it was probably what we now call boxer briefs. The point was that it looked a whole lot better than seeing him in pyjamas.

I think I actually took a pair of pyjamas with me when I moved from home to live interstate, but I probably wore them only half a dozen times. Like a lot of other things, I didn't really find out what my true preferences were until I was living independently and was forced to experiment. Same applies to clothing, food, music, and sex partners. :)

I thought that - until I had to spend some time in Hospital :( I was only given a couple of hours notice so hubby rushed into M&S and bought me a couple of pairs. I only ever wore the bottoms of one pair and the other pair remained unopened. They stayed that way until I put them in a charity bag years later!

The hospital didn't provide PJ's themselves?

I spent a week in hospital 2 years ago. It was for something relatively minor but they wanted to keep me under observation for a week. The hospital here issues you with their own pyjamas, and you get a clean pair each day.
Now being seriously ill is no fun, but hospital is also not a great place to be if you are feeling reasonably fit and healthy either, for the simple reason that there is bugger all to do except lie in bed, and occasionally to pace the corridors when you can't face another Sudoku. What no one had warned me about was that one of the effects of having all this energy to burn and not doing any physical activity is that it's easy to get an apparently random erection - and a persistent one at that! Walking around the hospital corridors, their flappy loose pyjamas seemed to constantly position themselves in such a way that things were exposed through the gaping fly, and this was even without a hardon let alone with one.

I very quickly got into the habit of wearing my briefs under the pyjamas when I went for my periodic strolls!

What ever happened to those embarrassing damn theatre-gown things that opened up right down the back? Try walking around the corridors in one of those and not providing some ...er, ......"interesting" sights for fellow patients!

In the hospitals here you need to take your own PJs and, if they need laundering, your family has to take them home to wash them :o

I think they still use the backless gowns but only when you're actually undergoing a procedure.

You're lucky you dont have to pay for a bed in hospitals in the UK these days!

I used to work in a hospital and saw plenty of younger male patients sleeping in just underwear and t shirt.

Wouldn't a bed be more comfortable?
Am I to understand from your post above that the Brit National 'Elff is in such a shambles that young males are now denied beds to sleep in?;) ;) :D
How sexist! Women and children first eh? I thought THAT idea went down with the Titanic....
