I just want to know which one of our of members this was and do we need to start collecting money for his bail?

In France it would be crime of passion and he'd be let off.

Everyone knows my views on stealing underwear. Lock him up and throw away the key. And force him to "freeball" in his prison suit. Let the punishment fit the crime.
I particularly like this paragraph:
The police could not immediately be reached for comment on what the man wanted the pants for.
A bit like asking of a stamp collector, what did they want the stamps for. Except that most stamp collectors make do with buying and swapping stamps, without needing to steal.

I can't believe they went and searched his house for swiping three pair. Not that it's OK, but still...
How did they know the stuff at his house was pilfered?
I do have a weakness for another man's pants. I always take them only when willingly surrendered, but this certainly drives home the consequences of not doing it that way.
I do feel sorry for the guy. What a particularly humiliating public disclosure.

Everyone knows I'm with SweatyAussie on the stealing thing, ....BUT before we all start condemning him, nowhere does it prove he "STOLE" any of them.
The three pairs in question may have been abandoned/lost in the change room, ...NOT all that uncommon occurrence.
I have no problems with blokes adopting "orphaned" or abandoned underwear, cleaning it up and giving it a good home.
Note he washes everything, which probably rules out the type of fetishism for "dirty" laundry seemingly so rampant here on this site.
And if the police happened to search my house, (or anyone else's here?) they'd certainly find an equal if not greater number of "neatly washed and folded" underwear, ....NONE of which is stolen!!!
But just imagine how that could be salaciously reported!
Sure the implication is there in the sensationalism of the journo who wrote the piece, but even if there may be one or two "looted" articles in the British Museum, it doesn't mean that it's chock full of stolen goods!

Ummm... well, the article does say that he was caught stealing those three pairs. And although the article doesn't actually say how it was proved that the rest of his stuff was stolen, presumably it would have been possible to check whether any of it was in fact the stuff that had been stolen from around town.
Perhaps the police are keeping the evidence "under wraps" pending court proceedings?

"Caught" and "proven" are two vastly different concepts.
Is it indeed stealing if you remove underwear that has been left abandoned in the changeroom?
Perhaps the owner may come back for it, ....but I'm betting it's more likely to end up in the rubbish bin.
