I'm so tired of taking my bike into the shop for servicing and hearing, "Dude, did you know this bikes too high for you."

Just as long as they don't ask if you're the type of bloke who'd prefer them to remove the saddle before you ride!

I know. Hey, at least then I'd know I was in the right kind of bike shop.

I don't know whether there was some intended erotic double meaning in this post, but taking it at face value, I would suggest that the guys in the shop probably know what they are talking about and you might want to consider their advice.

Were they referring to the bike itself (i.e. the frame), or the height of the saddle? If it's the bike itself, there isn't much you can do about it short of getting another bike, but be aware that you could be in a dangerous position if you need to come off the saddle in a hurry (or if you are jolted off). You should be able to straddle the bar with both feet flat on the ground. If you can't, and you find yourself thrown off the saddle onto the bar, guess what body part takes the impact?

I think the title of my thread implies my meaning in a literal sense. This bike was given to me by a friend who is no longer with us, and therefore it has sentimental value. As an avid cyclist, I am well aware of the inherent risks of riding it. Hence the wink in my previous post. Thank you.

And still on the topic of bikes, ...there's a gay resort not so far from where we live that advertises clothing-free holidays, ...in otherwords it's a nudist facility.
Their brochures spruik bike rides through the rainforest and sand dunes as one of their attractions. (Wasn't all that sure that bikes fared very well on sand, but I digress.)
The pics show fully naked men, (albeit discretely,), all happily riding bicycles with NO special seat covers or any other specific aids to hygiene!
Am I the only one who is more than a little concerned over this aspect?
You can't try on underwear/swimwear in the shops for health reasons, ...yet you can sit your most intimate, and probably least clean parts on a sweat-soaked leather saddle that who knows how many other blokes have already used? Or will use in the future?
Maybe I'm just being too "prissy", ....after all so many here really enjoy wearing someone else's very dirty undies, but cycling can be a very sweaty sport here in this climate.

That sounds like fun ;) Where was this resort you talk about? :D

Probably.:D:D
It's a valid concern, but one that I think is easily addressed. If the saddle is of the normal leather type, sweat (and anthing else such as bacteria) would stay on the surface rather than soaking in, and a quick wipe with a cloth and some disinfectant would be enough to avoid transmitting anything from one rider to the next.

Of course if it was a cloth saddle, then that would soak up sweat and pose more of a problem - but real men don't ride bikes with cloth saddles. :)

I'd be more worried about guys' dicks and nuts getting caught between thigh and saddle and pinched or squashed. I'd rather wear swimming togs at the very least, to keep things well positioned.

To work or just around town, a beat-up old Trek hybrid. For a pleasure bike ride, I have a Greg LaMond racing bike.

Yeah...No, you're not the only one. Now I'm thinking maybe someone should invent a condom for bicycle seats. Thank goodness for lycra, it's functional, and fun to look at. Not to mention the soreness and chafing that would result from 'unprotected riding':shocked

Men in underwear and bikes ,,,, My two favorite topics ... now I will NEVER leave this site! Here's my current ride ... only do about 5,000 miles per year ... building another bike this fall. HMmmmm, men in skinsuits ~! Is there a forum for that?

There ya go, underwear and bikes all wrapped up in one neat package. Which brings me to my next question. The other day I went for a ride in a pair of Joe Boxer athletic wear type shorts, black, loose fitting, knee length. I felt alot more relaxed, and less self conscious than I would in lycra bike shorts. Especially when I wanted to get off my bike and do some shopping, etc. What else do you guys wear when riding, besides bike shorts?

I am fond of wearing singlets like this one from N2N (catalog shot) ... although, you have to be a little more careful on the rough roads because there's no padding. ouch! ~ and with sweating they get a bit ... clingy.

I'm not familiar with the Joe Boxers, but if they are loose fitting and knee length I doubt I will be wearing them anytime soon.

I dunno - one of the main selling points of the lycra bike shorts, for me at any rate, is that they have made it acceptable to wear that kind of thing in public, even walking or on public transport, because cyclists sometimes have to dismount don't they? Why not take advantage of that fact? Still, wear what you are comfortable with - but I hope it's genuinely a case of catering for your own comfort, rather than being worried about others' disapproval of seeing you in bike shorts.

I myself don't wear the bike shorts nearly as much as I used to for riding, though they are finding a new use as gym wear (see my posts elsewhere). In cooler weather the lycra is fine, but in hot weather I find it gets very sweaty and sticky. The crotch pad, while it's good for cushioning, is also good at soaking up sweat, and it STAYS moist for a long time, unlike say cotton or nylon. I have mostly gone back to cycling in nylon sports shorts (proper short ones!), with briefs or speedo style swimmers underneath.

I understand completely SweatyAussie ... and luckily so does the cycling community ... the newer bibs and shorts, or perhaps just the higher-end priced ones (ASSOS, Performance, Castelli, Nalini ~ which can be found online a lot cheaper!), have a different type of padding ... fabric inspired by NASA or something so that it does not "store" the moisture ... because in that situation, moisture is not your friend! You might also like the "TRI" or triathlon gear ... shorter bike shorts (that might be more appealing to you) but also a "mini-pad" specifically designed for triathletes going from swimming to cycling to running and REALLY do not want (or quite frankly need) to carry any extra weight ~ especially back there. The new fabrics also have a great way of "moving" the moisture to the surface so that it evaporates faster keeping you dryer ... not completely dry but dryer. Not to mention, less padding = more manhood to see ;)

I bike in bib-sets, speed suits and skin suits ... the new power Lycra feels great on and is perfect for cycling around the city ... except when you have to pee ... there's no fly!

You mean we something else to thank NASA for? Not just non-stick frypans?

Don't forget those "disposable" nappies, (diapers to all you Yankees).
These little NASA-nasties remain in the environment for several bloody centuries! A better term might be "throw away"?
And a minimum of at least five or six a day for the first three years of life, each and every lazy bloody parents' baby is doing it's very own share of crapping up this world.
Still, I guess there's the possibility we might all be wearing 'em at some later stage!
Oh, and all your talk about mini and maxi-PADS is freaking me out here fellers!
