So about a month ago I went to my local Target to buy some Fruit of the Loom white briefs.

As the cashier, maybe 18-19 years old, rang me up I said "Am the only guy under the age of 30 who still buys these?" He looks at the package and goes "I think so--I actually didn't even know we sold these." He then accidentally dropped the package and fumbled it several times before successfully putting it in the bag.

About 2 weeks ago I went to another nearby Target to buy some Hanes white briefs. While at the checkout I asked the cashier, probably in his late twenties, who I think might have been a supervisor of sorts, "Do any guys under the age of 30 ever buy this kind, or am I it"? He said "No, a lot of people buy 'em. We sell a lot of them actually." I said "That makes me feel less dorky", he chuckled and said "I think they give people a sense of security."

2 different Targets, 2 different answers.

Maybe they buy the Hanes but not the FTLs? I somehow think that the FTL's are considered to be more of a 'tighty whitey' brand than Hanes.

Sounds like cashier #1 was a bit shy whereas #2 was a bit more open to banter

We've had the same thing here with one of our guys, if he answers the phone to the customer he's a bit monosyllabic whereas i'll have a good chat with the customer (hence why if you phone 99% of the time you will get me) and just for our US customers we do have a USA phone number so you don't get charged international rates (just try not to call after 10pm GMT as the missus goes spare when the phone rings and she is asleep as it diverts to the UK out of office hours)

"I think they give people a sense of security.".
It's a well known phenomenon that in times of high stress, people unconsciously seek comfort by going back to what represents stability to them.
Now in the age of terrorism, foreign wars, financial meltdowns and widespread job losses resulting in mortgage defaults and other social upheavals, could we even be seeing a swing back to the very underwear that is associated with growing up and living in more carefree and stable times?
Perhaps a thought worth examining?

The Bondsman, I took the statement about security to mean "support." Simple underwear to keep one's package secure and in place.

Well maybe that IS what he meant, ....but a jockstrap would undoubtedly give you more support if that was what you were after.
I was thinking maybe he meant security, ....as in unchanged, comforting, a continuity, like a security blanket.
You know, tried and trusted, rather than new-fangled unfamiliar johnnie-come-latelies?...
"It's good to know that you can still get the things I grew up with and remember from happier times"?
Human beings, ...well most of 'em anyway, are NOT all that welcoming of, or even fear "change" in their lives and often resist it. The larger proportion of the population truly feels much happier with the status quo being maintained.
Just a thought.
Of course, then again I could be completely wrong....

So today I went back to Target to pick up some small groceries.

As always, I have to walk down the underwear aisle.

I saw a guy, probably mid-late 30's buying the white Hanes briefs AND I noticed nearly all white Hanes briefs, in any size, were sold to near sold out (they are on sale for $5).

So more people are wearing white briefs at the moment I'd imagine.
