This is great news. Swimming has always been as much about the perve factor as about faster times. How many times have you seen someone refer to, or claim to have, a "swimmer's body", the implication being that a swimmer's body is something to be admired and aspired to?
The big question is now, will the IOC... ummm... follow suit, or will they persist in living by their proud Olympic motto: "Sillius, Oldius, Fartius"?

An all male chorus singing Hallelujah...
I think I'll celebrate by wearing a briefer bikini in the pool today:D

I have often seen this, but I'm not really sure what it means. If you take the time to actually look at swimmer's bodies, they all tend to lack definition and although muscular, actually become a bit rounded and porpoise like, being more streamlined than cut.
Unless of course, you are a female Chinese swimmer, then you can look like Arnie Schwazzeneger in his body-builder years!

Love this! Love this! :D :D :D
Don't get your hopes up too soon. I quote from another news report,
"Records began to tumble with the introduction of the body-covering Speedo LZR suit, which was 50 per cent polyurethane and aided buoyancy. But manufacturers then produced suits made totally of polyurethane, which trapped air and increased buoyancy and a host of new world records were set. An attempt to resist the new suits failed earlier this year but now they will go back to being made with textiles. The ruling takes effect next year..."
So, far from banning the monstrous body suit outright the wretched things just won't be 100 per cent polyurethane.

It's crazy! If swimmers are allowed to use these technological enhancements, why not allow them to wear flippers? What about a little jet-propelled hydrofoil that the "swimmer" just lies on?
If people want to see records broken, let them give the event a name other that "swimming". It's a bit like motor racing; that's a perfectly valid sport in itself, but no one confuses it with running.

You mean there's something else other than seeing men in tight costumes?:shocked

...and still the meaningless "records" tumble in the current meet in Rome.
And now FINA have "postponed" the mooted ban until "manufactureres have time to go back to making fabric suits".
What a crock!
Swimming has lost any last shred of credibility it ever had.
What next? We give all marathon runners a bycycle, but still call it "running"?
Phelps has said he will withdraw until the idiocy is corrected, but I think we here may be a little premature in our celebrations.
As I understand it only the new plastic suits are being banned, ...the one-piece neck-to-knee older style suit will still be allowed. I don't think we are going to see everyone back in conventional speedos again at all.
Somehow FINA can't cope with returning to un-enhanced times.

I don't think that was out of topic - perfectly on topic in fact. Plus I love the QueerClick guys and that article is hilarious. Nice to see that they share the same feelings as us in regards to the ugly suits.

I think the below cartoon from one of our papers here says a lot about FINA's hesitancy.
The times of course will get slower, which will stop their publicity everytime some suit-enhanced swimmer(?) breaks a record. In fact, there may NEVER be another record broken, ...and this is obviously playing on their mind too.

What FINA wants (in my humble opinion) is irrelevant. I have made it a personal goal to wear bikini type swimwear whenever I intend to get wet or tanned. I relish the thought of some provincial matron or red-necked bored short wearing slob making an off the cuff remark.
I don't think FINA is going to make a difference, nor will the amatuer swimming competitors. I point out that in parts of Europe it is not only acceptable but expected that men should wear a bikini type suit.
I love the look and feel of minimal swimwear, and in some situations, I have noted others who have been willing to doff their publically acceptable bored shorts for something a little more comfortable and form fitting. This I have found sets off a minor, but noticeable chain reaction bringing out more speedo type swimwear as the days go on.
Last year I found this to be the case when I went on vacation to Santa Barbara for several weeks. At first, I was the only man in a bikini. By the end of the first week there were at least 6 "regulars" who were now showing up in swim briefs/bikinis. By then end of the second week there were probably about 24 or more men walking around in brief swimwear. In contrast, I went back to the same beach to visit several weeks back. You guessed it. I was the only one in a bikini... Again.
My point is this. In my opinion, it's not the swimmers that are setting the trends, it's the everyday man who is willing to ignore the prudish and uneducated comments, ignore what is considered acceptable, and go to the beach or pool wearing what they please that will determine what becomes acceptable swimwear.
I'm one of those men. I think most of the men on this site are as well. So damn the matrons and full speed ahead. Wear the most revealing swimsuit you have and relish in the moment. :D
