Thumbs down Thinner and thinner!

Hasn't the fabric now used for most tighty-whities become incredibly THIN?
Even for what used to be the prestige brands that used to be so soft and luxurious!
Compare it to any of your older stuff you may have put away.
It's so see-through now as to be like tissue paper!

Yes, and no. A couple of those shots are the modal fabric, which is thinner. A couple others H&M, not really that thin despite the tag showing, but does look that way. I find the H&Ms pretty good. Another is Marks & Spencer, not thin at all on that cut.

More off-shore downgrades?

I have recently bought some new Staffords, Jockeys and Hanes, all of which now have fabric bordering on the see-through, specially when I compare it to older examples I have. You can easily see your bush through the material, ...should you have any.
Munsingwear H-fronts are now simply not worth buying since they went to Bangladesh I think?
They are HUGE in sizeing, specially the leg openings and really, REALLY badly made.

Staffords too are nowhere near the quality, durability or the comfort of what they were. Nor do they retain their shape around the legs after washing as they once did. The new fabric also becomes quite harsh after a wash or two.
I believe they are now made in a different country?

Thankfully, although Bond's here chose to shift production off-shore to China, the quality of my particular favourites remains fairly high, although the elastic is not quite what it used to be.

You are right about the Marks and Spence though.
They are still soft and thick.
Wonder if they are still made in the UK?

Nope, just checked. Sri Lanka. Some of the panties from M&S are made in Cambodia.

It would be interesting to compile a list of where our favorite brands are made.

The White Briefs, looks like Lithuania on a few that say on the tag, and H&M made in Bangledesh.

I bought a 3-pack of Calvin Klein briefs about two years ago and was shocked how bad they were. They lost the softness after one wash, whereas my prior packs of their briefs stayed soft forever. Not sure what the changes were but I tossed them in disgust. I thought the Brooks Brothers briefs also went downhill in recent years. They were my No. 1 for a while in the early 2010s, now I don't have any.

It would indeed....wonder if Trump will be able to bring men's underwear manufacturing back to the USA as part of his agenda against moving everything off-shore?
I would be more than willing to pay more for a quality product, made properly and out of decent fabric, than constantly being disappointed by the degradation of once fine, trustworthy and much-loved brands.
And it would provide much needed jobs locally.

I have some underwear that is vintage....like forty, maybe even more years old, verifiable by labels and packaging and it washes, wears, holds shape and lasts well, even the elastic which is by now "old" in anyone's estimation.
And yet I have new stuff which deteriorates so markedly as to have to be trashed after only two washes? Leg openings that balloon out, fabric that takes on the texture of tarpaulin, elastic that puckers up like a rasher of bacon, stitching that instantly unravels, ...manufacturing faults, you name it!

You mention Calvin Klein, ... whose only redeeming grace was to make tighty-whities popular again back in the 80's via so much porn that featured it.

Now that stuff certainly ain't cheap to buy, and the exorbitant mark-up is probably keeping Mr Klein in botox and dermal fillers to this day, but it's absolute crap in manufacture and material now. I too no longer have any of that so-called "designer" rubbish (junk? ) in my collection.

I don't own any Fruit of the Loom underwear, but they are running a bunch of commercials in the US lately, women's and men's, for their breathable underwear. The men's commercial features an office setting where they debate the name of the underwear. I'd be curious to see if they are making them in the US? I know FOTL closed a big factory in the US a few years back.

Thumbs down Off-shore usually means poor quality.

Even my much loved Bonds, probably Australia's biggest manufacturer of underwear etc. closed all production here in South Australia and moved it off-shore to China. Hundreds of jobs....gone.
Thankfully the quality of my particular favourite seems to have remained OK.
Can't speak for the many other "short-term" styles Bond's make that seem to come and go by the week.
Has the idea of men finding a style of underwear they like and sticking with it gone now?
It would be virtually impossible anyway because some of that stuff seems to have a very short production run...and then it's gone! For good! You never see it again.

Most bloke's underwear drawers I've seen now tend to be a one-of-everything type of collection anyway.
I tend to buy multiples of anything that I like, (because it does wear out)...unless of course it's a particularly vintage find and there's just the one available.

I do notice that some of my purchases deteriorate more rapidly than others, but i am a bit derelict in my duty of keeping a record. One brand I have noticed however that seems to last and hold its shape is Clever. I notice it with these because I wear them a lot, and I am waiting with trepidation for them to start losing their stretch. (They are thongs, so they won't interest Bondsman.) I believe they are made in Colombia. I don't think it's possible to generalise and say that underpants made in developed countries like USA or Australia are of good quality while those made in developing countries are not. It depends on which country, and probably on which manufacturer.

Joe Snyder are from Mexico. Make of that what you will.

Unhappy And yet it does seem that way.

Hmmmm, ...perhaps it's not PC to say such things, but I must say that I have seen a hugely noticeable decline in the standards of brands that I was very familiar with after production went off-shore.

It is interesting to take the time to read the reviews on Amazon for most men's briefs (which will not interest SweatyAussie), specially in the one star "I hate it" category. Some get quite racy!
Just about every man mentions how he used to buy such and such a brand for years as his favourite, but the new ones (now made off-shore) are so poorly made, the fit is now ridiculous or the fabric is so thin, or doesn't hold its shape as it used to.
Does it prove a point?
There are a lot of dissatisfied customers who seem to think so.

Yes i think that's generally true. When an existing local brand moves off-shore, the quality seems to go down.

I think the brands I mentioned originated from their respective countries, rather than being moved there from USA or Australia. Also do Mexico and Colombia qualify as "developing countries"? Not as developed as USA, Australia or the UK, but hardly in the same league as Bangladesh.

My theory is this: when a company like, say, Bonds moves its production out of Australia, they figure they already have a captive market so they can let quality slip (and let the underpants slip) and no one will notice. Companies like Pikante (who make Clever) were never based in the USA or Australia to begin with, so they have to prove themselves in order to get the custom.
