Picture Orientation

Iím the newbie here and having a bit of difficulty uploading pictures from my iPad to this site. Every picture Iíve uploaded so far (my avatar pic and three to a new public album I just created) show up eitehr sideways or upside down. Unfortunately I donít see a way to edit them (as in shift their orientation) after theyíve been uploaded.

Am I doing something wrong or am I missing an option here to fix them? Thanks!

You're not alone, here's my reply to another member a few posts down:

Quote:
The issue is with all the new cellphones (and tablets) which allow you to take photo in landscape or portrait mode whether the camera is right side up or up side down. The rotation and position info is stored in an image file as part of the EXIF information. There's no standard in how to deal with it, so Android does it differently than Apple.

I know this because I've been dealing with it when programming my Yourjockstraps.com website. I've built in an admin section for myself so I can deal with photos taken and uploaded from cellphones and rotate them and it took me months to finally get it working. For the most part, it works but there's still a few images that my rotate function doesn't work on, and apparently I'm not alone.

If any of you really care, here's an accurate explanation: https://www.daveperrett.com/articles...g-is-a-ghetto/

As for USG, the main issue is the software running this website, it's a purchased piece of software called vBulletin and the version I'm using is really old and doesn't have a clue on how to deal with all these (new?) fangled cellphones and device and their orientation mumbo-jumbo.

I imagine the upgraded software which I own but just can't find the time to install will be able to deal with it, but I don't see the upgrade happening anytime soon as my life is just too crazy right now.

As mentioned by Sweaty Aussie above and what I do when I have a problem image uploaded to Your Jockstraps: I simply download the image to my computer, use an image editing program to rotate the image and re-upload it. Doing so, usually fixes the EXIF data embedded in the image file and life is once again how it should be.

A nuisance I know, but until a miracle er... upgrade happens, there's nothing else that can be done.
If you don't have access to a computer and photo editing software, then until the site is upgraded, there's not a lot that can be done.

As an addition to this I changed the orientation of a picture before uploading using the image viewing softwear on my computer and on uploading the orientation was unchanged. Obviously some programmes do not change the orientation of the file but merely rotate it for viewing.

It's annoying, isn't it? And it's not as though rotating it is a complex procedure for a program, it's one of the simplest things you can do with image manipulation.

Even more annoying is when doing more complicated image manipulation is too hard and you discover that one of the ‘simple’ things you ‘can’ do doesn’t work! I’m talking as a user!

Very often, I am less interested in the picture orientation than I am of the orientation of the guy IN the picture.

What's really frustrating is when you carefully re orientate an image and you upload it and it's still upside down. Makes you wonder why you bothered! Perhaps it would be simpler to not post at all!

I read through that article to which deusex provided the link. Talk about humans creating a problem where one need not have existed. those EXIF orientation tags are a classic example of someone having a thought bubble "Hey, we can do this!" and acting on it without thinking through the consequences, leaving future generations to tidy up the mess.

Towards the end of the article there is this:
Quote:
There’s also some suggestion of ditching the EXIF orientation tag entirely, and putting the onus on device makers to rotate photos properly.
Exactly. Out of the mouths of babes. In fact I would never have used an orientation tag in the first place. I'd have the image oriented according to how the camera was positioned in the first place - simple huh? Then if the user wants to rotate it by 90 degrees or 180 degrees or whatever, they do it themselves. Actually rotate it, that is, rather than changing some tag. This is a very quick operation on any device. The option could even be built into the camera. The advantage of this system - blindingly obvious when you think about it - is that when transferred from one place to another, say from a phone camera to USG-online, the orientation stays the same, and you can see before uploading it how it will appear on the site.

It's no wonder the world is in such a mess when we can't even get little things like this right.

I donít even know what EXIF orientation tags are!
The whole thing is made more complicated because so much is done automatically that the user isnít aware of. As an example if I take a picture with the wrong orientation it is automatically reorientated before I see it so I donít know that the camera is effectively sideways or upside down! So almost impossible to easily fix.

johnmorango,

I understand your frustration, try programming for all the inconsistencies the various mobile phones have created.

The reality is: if you use a computer, there are programs available that will strip the EXIF data. If you are strictly using a phone or tablet, then there's not a whole lot you can do.

Until I get an upgrade done to USG, the site can't handle rotation data embedded in the EXIF portion of the file by mobile phones.

Sounds like an easy thing, but it's like this: USG is a free site, I make no money from it.

Jockstrap Central is my livelihood and it's more than a full time job and making sure it does well is my number one priority. Without it, there wouldn't be a USG as I couldn't afford to keep it running.

In the old days, I did see a number of regular sales coming from USG members and any investment of time and money into the USG website could be justified. But that's not the case anymore. USG, however, does have a place in my heart and i plan to keep it going and one day when I can squeeze in the quite large investment in time needed for the upgrade, it will happen. But until then, we're stuck with what we have.

The upgraded version of vBulletin (the software that runs the website) is a major change, both back end and front end that requires a huge learning curve and a complete redesign.

So that's where it stands right now. I hate to see anyone leave, but if it's that frustrating for you, then perhaps take a hiatus and check back once in a while to see if the upgrade has happened.

Regards,

John (deusex)
