Unlike the old site, this new software gives you the option to rotate and/or do some minor editing of your photo after you've uploaded it.
With cellphone cameras all having different methods of dealing with orientation, sometimes a photo will be uploaded sideways (or even upside down). But don't worry, the new USG allows you to fix your photos. It's just not obvious until you know where it is.
The first step is to find your photo and click on it. That will throw you into the photo viewer (your photo with a black background). In the upper right will be a set of icons, the second icon says "New Window" (see diagram below, icon is highlighted in yellow). Click it.
This will open the photo individually so you can edit the title, description and more. (It's also what you do if you want to leave a rating for the photo or simply want a bigger screen to leave a comment).
Next, you'll need to click the somewhat hidden menu and choose the "Edit Image" option. (again see diagram below, highlighted in yellow).
From there, you'll find yourself in a photo editor page. There's a number of options from rotate, crop, zoom, move and flip. Just modify your photo, click preview to see what you've done and if you're happy with it, click Save.
( Sorry, @underboy, I'm not making an example of your fine photo, it's just the first rotated photo I found in the gallery.)
That's today's lesson. Schools out.
