Sorry about coming into this discussion late, between all our Black Friday/Cyber Sales stuff and doing my final chemo session yesterday, I was a bit preoccupied.
As has been mentioned, private messages are now called Conversations. The only difference is you can choose to open up a conversation to multiple other members.
If you just start a Conversation with one other member, it's private.
When you start a Conversation with another member, there's an option to list other members to join the conversation. In that case they're semi-private as the other members you choose will see the Conversation. There's also an option to allow the other members you choose to join the Conversation to also add other members into the conversation.
So, just choose one person and the Conversation is private.

How do you delete private conversations

There's a link/button at the top right of a Conversation that reads "Leave". Click that and you will leave the conversation. You will get the option to chose to "accept further replies to that conversation" or "ignore further replies to that conversation".
Leaving a conversation will remove it from your Conversation list. But it's not until the other party also leaves the Conversation that the Conversation truly disappears - they will still have a copy of it. It's the same as sending someone an email. That email is forever until the person you sent the email to deletes it.
